Visit San Miguel de Allende

By Daniel Alcalá |

In San Miguel de Allende the landscape seems to have been suspended in time.

In Guanajuato, Mexico, there’s a very pleasant and picturesque destination that you’ll enjoy no matter what time of the year you plan to travel. We refer to San Miguel de Allende, a city that is popular for its traditional architecture, its peculiar geography, its steep streets and its colonial landscapes.

Without doubt, San Miguel de Allende offers some of the best touristic conditions, specially due to the typical Mexican warmth with which its inhabitants welcome visitors, the fact that most people speak English, something that helps foreign tourists feel at home, and because its landscape seems to have been suspended in time.

You should know that this city is considered one of the most beautiful in Mexico, so let your feet guide you along its streets while you discover the colorful corners that will appear before your eyes.

Before you arrive in San Miguel de Allende make a stop at the overlook on the road that leads to this destination. From there, you’ll enjoy a marvelous view of the city and spot, one by one, its churches and squares. Don’t miss the opportunity to take some photographs because this will be one of the best views of San Miguel you can find.

Even though there are luxurious boutique hotels that are wonderfully located in remodeled haciendas and colonial houses, this destination invites you not to stay in but to go out for a walk, so head to the city’s main square where you’ll find many different places to visit.

First, we’re sure you’ll want to go to the San Miguel Arcángel church, which was built in the seventeenth century. It catches the eye because of its neo-gothic façade that is very rare in Mexico, and that was superimposed in 1880. The church closes from 14:00 to 16:00, so if you’re looking for something to do exactly at that time, we recommend, as an alternative, visiting Ignacio Allende’s house. He is a famous historic character who participated in the Independence movement in Mexico.

There, you’ll find the Historic Museum of San Miguel de Allende in which you’ll learn about the city’s history since the sixteenth century. Also, this museum houses an exhibit of some of Allende’s belongings while some of the rooms have been restored in order to show the precise way in which they were furnished and decorated in the past. We particularly recommend visiting the bedrooms, prayer rooms and the kitchen.

In order to witness the development of events that occur in the city’s main square, you’ll find that it’s surrounded by coffee shops and ice cream shops in which, depending on the weather, you can either order a hot or cold coffee, or buy a popsicle or an ice cream in original flavors such as pistachio or rose petals.

If you prefer to walk, you can discover San Miguel’s charms by following the bell chimes of its multiple churches, in an environment that’s enveloped by tranquility and calm.

Travel to San Miguel de Allende and remember that all you need to pack is a pair of comfortable walking shoes, a sweater to keep warm in its chilly evenings and a hat to protect your skin from the sun.
