The largest fish market in the world is found in Tokyo and it’s a venue that, at first, might not seem very attractive due to the seafood smells, the chaotic environment and the fact that you have to wake up really early to enjoy the frantic commercial activities that are carried out there. Despite all that, it’s actually a place that DINKtravelers recommends visiting because it will offer you the chance to live a very different experience from what everyone expects to find in a trip to Japan.

The Tsukiji market sells around 2000 tons of fish a day. That’s a lot more than what they sell at the Rungis fish market in Paris, the second largest in the world, where they sell around 300 tons a day.

Tsukiji is divided in two important areas: Jonai Shijo and Jogai Shijo.



That is the area where they offer special bargains for wholesalers. Usually, activities start at three in the morning and closing sales take place from 5:00 to 7:00 in the morning. After that you’ll see a lot of motorized carts going to and fro transporting the products, workers wetting the fish with hoses and, of course, a great amount of tourists enjoying the commercial show.


There you will find stalls where they sell retail. Their costumers are mostly shop and restaurant owners. But what’s most important is that there you’ll find restaurants where you’ll be able to enjoy delicious fresh fish.


In our most recent trip, the writers of DINKtravelers tried sushi at the Tsukiji fish market and we must say that it was an exquisite experience. If you enjoy dishes prepared with fresh raw fish, apart from the sushi you should also try the maguro sashimi with bluefin (Toro) Tuna. This precious and pricey ingredient is the fish meat that is closest to the stomach and that is known as Fatty Tuna –it’s rich in omega-3 fatty acids which reduce cholesterol, control hypertension and prevent cardiovascular diseases. It’s so rich in fat that it even eliminates the spicy taste of wasabi! At the same time, Bluefin is subdivided in Chutoro –people’s favorite because it’s not so greasy– and Otoro, a cut that is so rich in fat that it gives the sensation of melting in your mouth.

As you can see, Tsukiji fish market invites you to live a local and fun gastronomic adventureIf you want to visit it, arrive at 3:00 in the morning because you’ll need to queue and access is limited to 100 visitors. Closing sales start at 5:00 and you’ll get to enjoy the two-hour show. Around 7:00 it’ll be time for breakfasts because that’s the time when restaurants open. Don’t forget that the market starts closing at 11:00 and you’ll find it completely closed by 13:00 when it’s time for cleanup.
