Before building the dam, it was neccesary to protect it from flooding, so two cofferdams were built in advance in order to divert the river. To protect the cofferdams a provisional horshoe-shaped structure was also built.
The dam was built in series of trapezoidal brackets which release the amount of heat produced by concrete. Otherwise, the dam would have already succumbed.
The façades of the dam and power plant were initially projected to be built without any concrete, only with gothic balustrade. Then, architect Gordon Kaufmann designed the exterior in ArtDeco style.
