Before building the dam, it was neccesary to protect it from flooding, so two cofferdams were built in advance in order to divert the river. To protect the cofferdams a provisional horshoe-shaped structure was also built.
The dam was built in series of trapezoidal brackets which release the amount of heat produced by concrete. Otherwise, the dam would have already succumbed.
The façades of the dam and power plant were initially projected to be built without any concrete, only with gothic balustrade. Then, architect Gordon Kaufmann designed the exterior in ArtDeco style.
The Hoover Dam has a surface of 624,00 hectares, as well as a storage volume of 126 million cubic ft.
The dam’s power plant contains 17 main turbine generators, which are capable of generating up to 2074 megawatts of hydroelectric energy per day.
When the dam was built, they also had to build a whole infrastructure around it. This area included shops, containers and suspension bridges.
To built the dam, they built a railroad that connected it with Las Vegas. It was essential to transport raw material and laborers.
The Hoover Dam has been part of several myths. One of them originated after the Transformers and Pixels movies were released. There they mentioned that a pyramid lies underneath the dam’s foundations.
The famous picture of a kiss between a sailor and a nurse took place a few steps away from the Zipper. It was on this luminous screen that they announced the end of World War II.
